Abbey is a PhD candidate investigating changes in the phenotype and functional capacity of unconventional T cells in Parkinson’s disease. With modern research reclassifying Parkinson’s disease as a gut-driven autoimmune disorder, unveiling the functional state of specific gut-prominent T cells will help facilitate the identification of immune biomarkers and give further insight into drivers of disease pathology. Understanding how pre-disease gut inflammation drives disease-defining neuroinflammation could ultimately help researchers slow, or even halt, the onset of neurological symptoms in Parkinson’s disease.
