Western Australia’s Perron Institute has announced the appointment of Professor Merrilee Needham to the leadership role of Medical Director.

Professor Needham is a Consultant Neurologist and Head of Myositis Research at the Perron Institute and Personalised Medicine Centre at Murdoch University. She is also Foundation Chair of Neurology and Consultant Neurologist at Fiona Stanley Hospital, Murdoch University and Notre Dame University.

Integral to Professor Needham’s neuromuscular research, with a particular interest in the form of myositis known as Inclusion Body Myositis, has been the development of a myositis biobank and the Australian Myositis Registry.

“The Medical Director contributes to the values and broad mission of the Perron Institute by bringing expert clinical and research knowledge to our organisation,” said Chief Executive Officer Steve Arnott in welcoming Professor Needham to her new role.

“As a member of the leadership team, the Medical Director plays a key part in strategic planning for the clinics and clinical trial services, and advising the CEO and Board.”

Well recognised globally for her clinical and research contributions, Professor Needham is also highly respected for her patient-centred, personalised approach to patient care. A major focus is partnering with patients in research to better understand their diseases, identify treatment targets and facilitate participation in clinical trials.

“This personalised approach is essential in supporting people with neuromuscular conditions such as Inclusion Body Myositis,” Professor Needham said.

“A big picture goal is to create stronger integration between clinical services and scientific research. This begins with the clinical care of patients, allowing them to be part of scientific discoveries, and then bringing these discoveries back to patients through clinical trials. The aim is to ensure research is patient-centred and relevant, ultimately improving outcomes for our community.”

Professor Needham takes over as Perron Institute Medical Director from esteemed Neurologist, Clinical Professor David Blacker AM, who has served with distinction in this role for over a decade.

“Professor Needham is perfectly positioned to take on the role, and oversee the start of an exciting new era,” Clinical Professor Blacker said.
