$25 million has been awarded to 20 Western Australian health and medical research facilities via the Future Health Research and Innovation (FHRI) Fund to support the indirect and operational costs associated with research.

Research grant funding generally does not cover indirect and other associated costs including operating shared research equipment, facilities and services.

Through the Research Infrastructure Support (RIS) program, the Perron Institute received over $960,000.

RIS funding aims to provide a sustainable research environment and to promote excellence in health and medical research in Western Australia.

Dr Rebekah Puls, Head of Research at the Perron Institute, thanked the Government of Western Australia for the generous funding awarded and acknowledged the support of the Hon. Stephen Dawson, the Minister for Medical Research, for the ongoing support for the sector in WA.

“This funding is instrumental and supports some of the true costs of medical research, such as running the laboratories and infrastructure overheads,” she said.

“The crucial investment allows our researchers to continue their work finding treatments and diagnostics for complex and wide-ranging neurological conditions.”
