Helping people and making connections keeps Sonya Phillips motivated in complex environments.
Sonya recently joined the Perron Institute clinic as a receptionist and administrator.
“I really wanted a new challenge,” Sonya said. “I thoroughly enjoyed being a high school teacher in a variety of Perth schools, including a teacher-in-charge of music for 15 years, a clarinet teacher and concert band director. During that time, I had two children and then lived in Texas for four years due to my husband’s work.
“My son lives with cystic fibrosis, and I’ve spent a lot of time in hospitals and experienced the incredible work and support given by all the hospital staff, especially the nurses. It gave me the inspiration that, maybe, I could give back and contribute in some small way.
“I volunteered at Princess Margaret Hospital in the immunology department and the Friendship Room, and then worked as a medical receptionist in a GP clinic.
“When starting a new job, you’re never quite sure what dynamic you’re walking into. In the Perron Institute clinic, Kayt Every and Shanae Head have been very supportive and encouraging, and I love their sense of humour.
“When asked about giving advice or lessons learned, I feel that regardless of age or circumstances, life can sometimes feel like a smooth journey, where everything is in its place. But suddenly, it can throw you into unexpected situations, akin to finding yourself behind the wheel of a Ferrari at the Shanghai Grand Prix, hurtling at 300kph into a corner your car isn’t equipped for, and you lack the necessary skills to navigate.
“It’s important to recognise and accept these moments. If things aren’t going as planned, it’s okay to make changes. Whether it’s acquiring new skills or reaching out to a trusted friend, family member, or support service like Lifeline, talking about it can make a difference.
“There’s no definitive roadmap for life’s challenges but acknowledging them and seeking help when needed are steps in the right direction.
“In my spare time I love to listen to music, from Bach to Queen and Pink. I have a passion for shoes, and I’m currently learning how to play Mahjong.”
Welcome, Sonya!
