The Neurological Council of WA (NCWA) hosted the World Brain Day Neurological Summit on 22 July and the theme was ‘Brain Health: Access for All’.
NCWA CEO Etta Palumbo welcomed everyone to a packed house at Fraser’s Function Centre in Kings Park and highlighted that it is time to make a change.
Emeritus Professor Dr Len Collard delivered a thought-provoking welcome to country, suggesting, “We need to recognise what the signs in this country are telling us.”
The Hon. Meredith Hammat MLA, WA Minister for Health and Mental Health reiterated the alarming statistic that one in three people in WA are affected by a neurological condition. To tackle this significant public health priority, we need shared commitments of outcomes, early intervention, strengthened collaborations and to raise awareness.
Professor Merrilee Needham, Perron Institute Medical Director and consultant neurologist, highlighted that neurological conditions are the leading cause of ill health and disability globally. Locally, demand is exceeding capacity and there is an ageing workforce.
She explained how earlier diagnosis is required, which is often complex as presentation can vary. There is a community care gap and carers need greater recognition. NCWA Neuro Nurses provide an important service and can help.
Dr Linda Friedland, Deputy Chair of NCWA and author, provided an evidence-based overview of the public health focus journey of various neurological conditions including Alzheimer’s, dementia, stroke and multiple sclerosis, and suggested that we need to “translate simple measures into a strategy for prevention”.
Etta Palumbo closed proceedings, emphasising that together, we can work towards a future where the brain is valued, protected and prioritised – and accessible to all.
Thank you to the organisers and speakers for an excellent, informative and collaborative event.
