Research group
Dr Frances Theunissen is a postdoctoral research scientist working with Professor Anthony Akkari in the Motor Neurone Disease Genetics and Therapeutics Research group based at the Perron Institute and at CMMIT, Murdoch University. She completed her PhD in 2023, under the supervision of Professor Anthony Akkari, Prof Steve Wilton and Prof Sue Fletcher. Her research seeks to identify novel genetic markers that can be used to improve the success of MND clinical trials. This research enables a strategy to enrich clinical trials for participants more likely to respond to newly developed therapeutics. Alongside Professor Anthony Akkari, Frances is the co-lead of genetic marker development for US biotech company Black Swan Pharmaceuticals, driving the genetic enrichment strategies for their antisense therapy portfolio.
