Research group
Dr Matthew Bagg is a clinical scientist and Physiotherapist, working to improve understanding and healthcare for people with pain and nervous system conditions. Matthew is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Notre Dame Australia and the Perron Institute in Perth, Australia. Matthew is also a Fellow at the Centre for Pain IMPACT at NeuRA (Sydney, Australia), and provides private clinical consultancy services in Perth.
A major focus of Matthew’s work is improved understanding and care for people with traumatic brain injury. Matthew works within national partnerships to co-design information collection that will support improved outcomes and healthcare for people with traumatic brain injury and their families in Australia.
A second focus for Matthew is improved treatment for persistent back pain. People experience little to no benefit, on average, from available treatments. Treatments targeting brain function are a promising, novel, approach to treatment of back pain. Matthew led the publication of recent clinical trial results in JAMA, which demonstrated a likely clinical benefit and minimal harm from treatment targeting brain function.
A third focus for Matthew is supporting the conduct of science. Matthew is an Ambassador for the Centre for Open Science and a founding member of OPeRA (Open Pain Research Appraisal and Advocacy). Transparent and open practice is important to allow users of research to understand and evaluate research whilst they use it.
