PhD researcher receives inaugural Aspire Award
Perron Institute PhD student, Dr Srimathy Vijayan received the inaugural ‘Perron Institute Aspire Award’ at the 20th Aspire Awards ceremony this month.
Dr Vijayan is undertaking her clinical research at the institute with Professor Frank Mastaglia and Clinical Associate Professor Rick Stell, investigating the effects of deep brain stimulation on sleep and breathing parameters in people living with Parkinson’s disease.
The Aspire Awards program, an initiative of the Perth Convention Bureau, assists personal and professional development through scholarships and by making it possible for award recipients to attend relevant international conferences. It is designed to support individuals from not-for-profit organisations and academia as well as researchers and professionals across a range of industry sectors.
From 60 applicants, Dr Vijayan was one of ten award recipients, each of whom has received funds to cover travel, accommodation and registration expenses for attendance at a relevant international conference or, for further study in their chosen field.
“I am honoured to be the recipient of the inaugural Perron Institute Aspire Award,” Dr Vijayan said. “This is a valuable opportunity to further my professional development and it is greatly appreciated.”
Dr Vijayan plans to use the funds to attend the International congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders taking place in Nice, France in September 2019.
