We are looking for Research participants
- Aged over 18 years
- With a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease
- Have mild to moderate balance impairment though able to walk independently
- Reduced exercise tolerance.
To take part in the above study to examine the effects of inspiratory muscle training (IMT) on lung function, gait and balance among mild to moderately affected patients with Parkinson’s disease.
Pre- and post-treatment assessments, and initial training will be required at the Perron Institute and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.
Participants will be recruited to undergo 8 weeks of High intensity IMT or 8 weeks of Sham IMT. After initial supervised training, participants will perform the 21-minute exercise program 3 times a week at home. Lung function, balance, mobility and Quality of Life will be measured before and after the 8-week training program and 6 months after starting the training. The results of the study have the potential to deliver functional benefits from a simple, home based, easily performed exercise program.
